Name of the project: Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (PVAWG-CHT) project information.

The Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (PVAWG-CHT) project is implemented by Women’s Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE) with the support of the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UNTF). The project aims to prevent violence against Indigenous women and girls and to strengthen community-based mechanisms for protection, access to justice, and gender equality in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.

Indigenous women and girls in the CHT face intersecting forms of discrimination due to gender, ethnicity, geography, poverty, and limited access to services. Harmful social norms, weak institutional responses, and low awareness of legal rights further increase their vulnerability to gender-based violence. The PVAWG-CHT project addresses these challenges through a holistic, rights-based, and community-centred approach.

The project focuses on empowering Indigenous adolescent girls and young women, strengthening community leadership and accountability, and improving coordination with local service providers and duty bearers. Key interventions include the establishment of Community Learning Centres (CLCs) as safe spaces, awareness-raising on women’s rights and violence prevention, capacity building of community leaders and frontline actors, and support for survivor-centred referral pathways.

By engaging women, men, youth, traditional leaders, and institutions, the project promotes positive social norm change and fosters collective responsibility to prevent violence. The PVAWG-CHT project contributes to national and global commitments on gender equality, human rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals, while ensuring that Indigenous women and girls in the CHT are at the centre of solutions that affect their lives.
